Welcome to management 333 managing non profit organizations my name is Linda Johnson and I will be your instructor this semester for this course in the year 2000 I left my very comfortable surroundings on the hill at Western Kentucky University to create a not for profit organization called CITE the center for technology enterprise located here Bowling Green, Kentucky after three years this fall I of scaling creating and scaling a multi million dollar not for profit I have returned to Western Kentucky University to continue my research and teaching and I am very excited to be delivering Western Kentucky University first fully web based course on managing non profits this semester there are more than one million non profit organizations registered with the internal revenue service a non profit organizations in the United States employ over 10.2 million individuals non profit organizations have a tremendous impact on our society according to our texts author Thomas Wolff the contribution of non profit organizations to America’s quality of life is incalculable the impact will undoubtly continue to grow as government budgets tighten and programs are reduced thereby increasing the demand placed on non profit sectors to fill the void there are five course objectives that we will be focusing on this semester first we will seek to understand the importance of non profit organizations to societies two we will examine key issues in governing non profit institutions three we will expose you to a variety of local non profit organizations four foster interest in an career in non profit organizations and five develop management skills useful in both non profit and other organizations unlike a traditional lecture class this course will be entirely taught through the internet in order to be successful in this course you will need to have daily access to a computer that is connected to the internet and you will need to be familiar with e-courses at Western Kentucky University and how blackboard operates if you are viewing this video then chances are you’ve already discovered how to long on to the course and navigate its contents if you need help with blackboard navigation feel free to e-mail me at the address that you see on the slide because the course is fully electronic you can replay videos download files print handouts as often as you like the discussion board will be available twenty four hours a day seven days a week for you to use because the course is scheduled at Western Kentucky University as a second bi-term course you can expect to spend ten to fifteen hours per week working on course content if your not going to have ten to fifteen hours a week to devote to this course between its start date of Tuesday October 19th and its end date Monday December 13th then you may want to reconsider your participation this semester Benjamin Franklin said that an investment in knowledge pays the best return the time you spend on this course is an investment in your knowledge one that I believe will pay dividends for years to come again I would like to welcome you to the course and if I can help you in some way as you navigate through the content that I have designed for you please don’t hesitate to contact me again my contact information is on the slide and other information about how to reach me can be found in the staff section of this course. |
